321 : Mazes

Mazes are one of our favourite new bands. They write jams. Jams about knives and awesome Grandparents. Read the very sweet story behind Bowie Knives at our NME blog and after the jump main dude Jack Cooper does the 321.

Jack Cooper: “1. Mazes are humans.

“2. Mazes like stuff.

“3. Mazes rule.”

JC: “Well this is just me… I’m not talking for the others. Your Own Back Yard by Dion. I think this is the only song on the Born To Be With You album that Phil Spector didn’t produce. Why do I love it? Well the lyrics I suppose, it’s very cinematic and I couldn’t begin to imagine writing something like that. Lyrics usually pass me by completely… a lot of our songs don’t really have set lyrics cos I just can’t remember them… I’m dyslexic… probably something to do with that…but I know Your Own Back Yard all the way up and down.

“A new song… Maybe I Wanna Kill by The Crocodiles, just cos it’s like a cool Cheap Trick thing. All power to them.”

JC: “I want us to back Mark E Smith, Jonathan Richman or Hamish Kilgour.”

Mazes have a 7″ out in July on Sex Is Disgusting, a split cassette with Meth Teeth and Male Bonding on Split Tapes (again in July) and then a split with PENS later in the summer. Says Jack: “I just recorded an album with PENS this weekend. Their songs are really wonderful, so I hope that sees the light of day soon. We should finish an album pretty soon too.”
