Toddla T brings his kiddy crack digi-dancehall to the Patchwork Pirates never-not-ram-up Hugs & Thugs night this Friday (30/11). To celebrate, our oh-so-directional dudes at Dazed are hosting his brand new mix. And there's more! You can still cop Toddla's ridonkulous Ghettoblaster mix and his limited 7"s are available from the 1965 store. The youth are so productive.
It's cold, wet and we saw three fights on the bus home today. But DJs are making spacey re-edits of Guns 'N' Roses anthems so the world really isn't so bad.
Mumblecore. The first significant movement in US cinema for a decade OR a group of young filmmakers who cast each other in sort-of-funny, lo-fi movies that usually involve them all having sex with each other? Probably the latter! And more power to them. At the London Film Festival Hannah Takes The Stairs director Joe Swanberg told us he expects the movie world to become more like music with local, national and international scenes, stars and genres. Mumblecore, he said, was just the first example of this democratization. This is the trailer for his new web series, Butterknife that starts soon over on Spout. It’s about a gumshoe detective who, we’re guessing, has lots of sex with Swanberg’s director pals.
Stoke Newington's 12th tallest building, the Tower of Pinglewood, is in serious danger of collapse today thanks to all the bass coming out of this stupid blog. We blame Boy 8 Bit. His remix of Lethal B's ode to internet stalking contains the kind of low frequencies that can stop a child's heart beating. That's what we're telling the social services anyway.
Ever thought ‘this dubstep guy I’m watching is good but how awesome would it be if he started playing a trombone or, hey, even a Theremin?’ Yeah? Then Bass Clef is your dude. You can catch his super-entertaining show tonight at White Heat. Also playing (every day he’s hussling) is Afrikan Boy who’s on the great new Paper Planes remix with Rye Rye. Right now MIA is the Angelina Jolie of post world hip-hop and Afrikan Boy and Rye Rye her Maddox and Zahara.
As introductions go, this is a pretty good one. Vampire Weekend’s first video scores roof-high in both Witty and Preppy. It could only really be improved by getting Chevy Chase* in to mime the vocal.
*(You are wrong, Jens, Chase's stupid, grinning face is amazing.)
Predictably our Swn coverage petered out prematurely. We were having too much fun! Two Gallants, Kotki Dwa, Yeasayer and Black Lips all played on Sunday. Huw and the other great dudes behind the festival are already working on next year's…
1. It's pronounced 'soon'.
2. Drinking Brains will turn you into an alcoholic zombie.
3. Zach Condon is onetalenteddude.
4. Truckers Of Husk live are like Battles arranged by David Axelrod only twice as amazing.
Not everyone is crazy about horses, but the whole world loves ponies. Tiny ponies like this awesome little guy are even better. Two of our favourite French bands, Poney Poney and Poni Hoax, clearly know what's up. Tiny French rock ponies must be the most amazing animals ever.
Kotki Dwa means 'two cats' in Polish (thanks Google!), a name that should stand this electro-rock trio in good stead with the cute animal-loving corners of the internets. They've self-released two albums full of ideas, hooks and other good pop music stuff, and are soon to lose their Britain's Best Unsigned Band crown (i.e. they are being signed). Go see them at Swn this weekend, we're planning to (if we're still alive on Sunday).
Over the weekend, we waded through Ridley Scott's American Gangster. It's entertaining enough (especially Rza flaunting his ink- it's supposed to be the 70s, dude!), but an epic crime classic it is not. So thanks to Chris Robinson for four giddy, cameo-packed minutes of glamourous, widescreen wiseguyery. That's how it's done, Ridley!
Our good pal Fume Avanti obsesses over musical peculiarities. At the moment he likes singers who sing in English even though it's not their first language. Here’s a mixtape of some of his favourites…
Tonight's the night for mass pyromania. Across the UK things are burnt and fireworks become weapons. To soundtrack the nocturnal torching here’s the year's biggest dubstep tune from Benga & Coki. We've always thought it sounded familiar and now thanks to Ayres's recent Bangers & Cash/Ludacris blend we know why.
It’s not like we spend all day, every day scouring the internets for silly stuff to put on here. We sleep a good 17 out of every 24 hours and then there’s our baby smuggling business… But we digress, here’s Fat Jew from
MTV’s Team Facelift telling it straight.
