For Whom The Bell Tolls
(photo from Akiko's blog) Since we last caught up with them, The Big Pink have grown bigger, much bigger, and maybe even a little bit pinker. This rough-hewn gem is a b-side from their new single on Big Love, our pal Haruka's excellent new Japanese label, who you may know from their recent SALEM 7" . If you are ever in Tokyo visit Haruka at her Escalator emporium. She rules and her carrier bags are excellent. The Big Pink - With You [mp3] [Buy] Posted by: Scott 29/04/09 Pound Notes . The xx - Crystalised I've started a new blog for our pals across the pond at FADER. It's called Dollars To Pounds and will be up every Monday (I was a bit late this week, expect that to happen a lot). This week's edition is all about The xx whose awesome new video is above. Find out who they think the sexiest vampire is and download their new single Crystalised at FADER... [Continues at FADER...] Posted by: Scott 28/04/09 321 : Suckers
(photo by Victoria Jacob) We spoke to the awesome Suckers about writing anthems over at our NME blog. Here Pan from the band tells us about eating avocado pits, the Chordettes and what rhymes with purple. [Photo by Steve Brummell] We were sad when One More Grain parted ways last year, but sometimes break-ups can be positive. Like when Kelly and Dylan split and she had to deal with a drug-addicted mother, got hooked on weight-loss pills, got caught in a fire which left her partially burned, joined a cult after being brainwashed by one of her professors, got addicted to cocaine, got pregnant with Brandon's baby and had a miscarriage, got shot at at the airport, then got raped before killing her attacker. Kelly eventually became a guidance counsellor. Things also worked out alright for Gyratory System who rose from the ashes of OMG as a kind of awesome zombie marching band. If there's one thing I like more than the arrival of a new digital-dancehall-horrorcore-surf-ragga album, it's the arrival of one which claims to be by "a Jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984." We will be back next week. See you then. Posted by: Scott 13/04/09 Sex Sells
When they're not busy booking bands like Abe Vigoda, Graffiti Island and Hype Williams for their rad parties, our dudes at Sex beat are knee-deep in cardboard and sellotape, creating lovingly packaged, limited-run albums. They also have the best handwriting we've ever seen. Their new compilation features all those awesome, noisy, DIY bands we go on about, like KASMs, Twin Lion and the mighty Male Bonding, whose contribution we have here. There are only 100 copies of Sexbeat 002 available so grab yours while you can. Tracklisting after the jump... [Continues...] Male Bonding - Pirate Key [mp3] Posted by: Scott 11/04/09 A New Leaf
[Photo by Michael Persico] Icy Demons are the latest sonic scamps to join the lovely and evermore eclectic Leaf Label. Our photosynthetic pals will be putting out the Chicago (via Canterbury) supergroup's latest album later this month, while flexing their roster with a new compilation called Don't Run Over The Birds, Please. We have a couple of download codes for the comp to give away. If you'd like one, drop us a line. Icy Demons - 1850 [mp3] Posted by: Scott 07/04/09 Breaking Bad
For the longest time we have been meaning to write about Internet Forever. They recently sent us some amazing new songs, but they're still being mastered, so for now here is the charming Break Bones. It balances twee, fuzz and handclaps in two minutes of Layer 1 loveliness. See them at the Wilmington Arms this Saturday. (Photo: Underexposed) While we wait patiently for the ridiculous Kanye West cover of Banjo Or Freakout's Mr No to hit the internet, here is an epic, swirling remix from Phaseone and a henched up version from Radiant Dragon. The good people at Half Machine Records have put together a souped-up, bonus disc-heavy package for the new EP which you can order from their shop, but frankly nothing will prepare you for the mess that is Yeezy's autotuned dreampop extravaganza.
