Hot And Fresh Out The Kitchen

Just as the quality of a party can be defined by the guests that show up (Nick Knowles + Calum Best x Sarah Harding= A LIST!) so the general awesomeness of a song can be measured by the remixers it attracts.

Two of our favourite bands combine on Hot Chip’s nice remix of Tilly & the Wall’s Sing Songs Along. It’s as bouncy and happy as you’d expect and they’ve kept the fantastic tap-dancing.

If you blinked last week you will have missed the leak of Bjork’s Earth Intruders that we posted. We were slightly under whelmed by Timbaland’s half-arsed beat but this new Spank Rock remix plants our favourite Icelander firmly at the centre of the dancefloor.

LCD Soundsystem’s Sound Of Silver remains one of the year's best records and DFA are releasing a series of 7”s that feature covers of some of the albums highlights. First up for the version treatment is the anthemic All My Friends and here are Franz Ferdinand and John Cale’s suitably bombastic efforts.

Coleen: The Indie Queen

Coleen McLoughlin’s journey from naïve ogre-loving WAG to best-selling author and junior style icon has been well documented, but perhaps her most surprising chroniclers have been the Pitchfork-approved stars of US indie rock.

This unlikely trend began when Ted Leo & the Pharmacists included the track Colleen on their album, Living With The Living. Though they choose to disguise their titular heroine by cleverly adding an extra L to her name (a signifier we will see repeated), it is clear the Washington band are narrating McLoughlin’s rise to fame through their chosen medium: chugging pub-rock. Can I Hear That, Jus'?

We're still buzzed about meeting Just Blaze last week at the 110 Sessions. You can read our account of it over at Dazed. Here's the little song Mr Fort Knocks made on stage with JME, Skepta and Klashnekoff. You can also grab the Brent Rollins designed artwork from Spine Magazine.

This Is Why I'm Hot

There’s been a heatwave in London that has thrown our spring wardrobe into complete disarray. Today we look like disco Eskimos. Still, the weather practically demands that everyone drinks alcohol all day long so we’re too drunk to care.

As a tribute to the sunshine here are our favourite new songs to drink warm wine to.

Jona Bechtolt from The Blow has released a solo album under the name YACHT that might just have the best title of the year. It's called I Believe In You Your Magic Is Real and it's full of quirky little electronic ditties like this. Just remember ALL CAPS when you spell the man's name.

YACHT - Find A Penny (Pick It Up) [mp3] [Buy]

Not only does the excellent new Hot Chip DJ Kicks comp contain our favourite song ever, it opens with this electro-soul beauty from Grovesnor. On this evidence they're destined for big things.

Grovesnor - Nitemoves [mp3] [Buy]

Kooky voice? CHECK! Crazy hair? CHECK! Blogger? CHECK! Solid indie-rock credentials? CHECK! Pretty in an 18th century kind of way? CHECK! Annie Clark is St. Vincent and the internet loves her. The 23-year-old used to play guitar with the Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens and her debut album will be released by Beggars later this year.

St. Vincent - Paris Is Burning [mp3] [Buy]

Take It Slow, Take It Easy On Me

1,2,3,4

My Moon, My Man

Vodka sandals and chilli chocolate tortilla chips aside, our favourite thing in the world is formation dancing. Lovely Leslie Feist (the 'lovely' prefix is now standard) has indulged our fancy for the synchronized shimmy with not one but two impressively choreographed videos. We lean towards the 1,2,3,4 clip because Feist is wearing a purple sequined jumpsuit, but the Ok Go-style escalator play in My Moon, My Man is also pretty fantastic.

We've got a couple of new remixes for you here and one of our favourites from last year, the Postal Service take on Mushaboom.

Feist is playing at London's Sheperds Bush Empire tonight. Fingers crossed for the jumpsuit.

Blaze of Glory

Last Friday we were lucky enough to attend the 110 Sessions at the crazy Playstation house in east London. The good people at Blacktronica arranged for the mighty Just Blaze to produce a song live on stage with some of the UK's most exciting emcees- Klashnekoff, JME and Skepta- while Brent Rollins designed the sleeve downstairs. The resulting song and artwork will be available exclusively at Spine Magazine in a few days.

We covered the event for Dazed and had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Mr Fort Knocks himself. We'll post a link to the story later in the week, but for now here are a couple of videos.

First we've got Skepta nailing his verse:

And here's the first take from K-Lash:

For a taste of what's to come here is a fine track from each of the participants:

They Might Be Giants

MTV’s new comedy sketch show Human Giant has it all: web-savvy hipsters, upskirts, fake 9/11 movie trailers starring children, Ghostface… it pushes all our buttons. The first episode is available as a free download on iTunes and we’ve got a few favourite sketches here.

Egg Hunt

Here's the new Bjork single, Earth Intruders featuring Timbaland and Konono No. 1. Happy Easter!

Bjork - Earth Intruders [mp3] [Source: Shameless Complacency]

UPDATE: We were politely asked to remove the excellent new Bjork song and it looks like the fine folk at Shameless Complacency have been closed down. Oops.

So instead, here is our favourite Icelander's drunken karaoke rendition of 2 Unlimited's No Limit.

Elegant to Elephant

When Nas recorded the song Hip-Hop Is Dead, a self-righteous rant about the decline of rap music, he probably had his heart in the right place. But his assertion that hip-hop is being dumbed into extinction was a little undermined by his decision to hire producer Will.I.Am, the evil genius whose chief contribution to rap has been the phrase "lovely lady lumps." And when Nas spits that “Everybody sound the same, commercialize the game/ Reminiscin' when it wasn't all business” he’d already agreed to appear alongside Kanye, KRS-1 and Rakim on the Nike-commissioned Classic, an advertisong for Air Force Ones disguised as a celebration of old school hip-hop. So yes, Nas is a hypocrite, but he's also completely wrong. Hip-hop isn’t dead. Hip-hop is drunk as fuck and looking to party. Just like us. It’s Easter, it’s sunny and here at Pinglewood we are stuntin’ like our daddies. Over the next few days these are the jams we’ll be bumping in our ride.

Cool Kids - '88 [mp3]

Chicago’s Cool Kids will release their debut single soon on FOP Catchdubs and A-Trak’s new Fool's Gold. They come on like a cross between Spank Rock and the Clipse, so pretty much a marriage made in hipster-heaven.

Wale - Good Girls [mp3]

Wale has a massive buzz, a smooth flow and a cowbell. With his clever wordplay and jazzy tracks he looks set to go Lupe this year. He’s currently working with Mark Ronson so may end up on a Commitments-funk cover of some old Brit-pop song, but for now we’ll just enjoy that cowbell.

Devin the Dude - Sheusetabe [mp3] [Buy]

Devin the Dude recently appeared at number 15 on a list of the 25 worst names in hip-hop. Crazy. This is a list that couldn’t find a place for Peedi Peedi, a rapper who may as well change his name to MC Ian Huntley.

Outkast & Marvin Gaye - Get It So Fresh (DJ B.Cause remix) [mp3]

Lots of people get snobbish about blends because, “oh, mash-ups are so 3 years ago, darling”, but those morons are missing out on amazing stuff like this little slice of sunshine from DJ B.Cause.

Hate Us Now - Win J Dilla's Ruff Draft Tape

Everybody knows that celebrity baby collectors Brad & Angelina are the planet’s most unselfish philanthropists and that their quest to own a child from each of the world’s slums will one day bring about peace on Earth, but what about tales of everyday generosity, of ordinary altruism? What if, say, an irreverent music blog with appalling grammar teamed up with the kings of independent hip-hop just to give shit away?

Yep, IT’S COMPETITION TIME!

To celebrate the special re-release of J Dilla’s seminal Ruff Draft those generous folk at Stones Throw Records have furnished us with a few copies of the strictly limited-edition, rarer-than-Lohan-underwear Ruff Draft cassette tapes. “Sound like it’s straight from the ma’fuckin’ cassette!” says dearly departed Dilla on the intro and thanks to a clever marketing gimmick it actually will be for the lucky winners.

To win a Ruff Draft tape all you have to do is diss Pinglewood. Via the medium of rhyme we want you to slag us off, call us out, talk trash to us. Just a few lines will do and the funniest win (extra points will be awarded for Hollyoaks references). Send your caustic barbs to us here along with your name and a postal address. Competiton closes on 10/04/07. If you don't fancy your chances you can, and should, buy Ruff Draft here.

Here are a few recent diss tracks to get you warmed up.

Video disses are all the rage and the ridiculous Scott Storch recently took his spat with Timbaland to YouTube. Timbaland dragged D.O.E. in to reply on his behalf, then had a go himself on his new single/hatefest that also finds Nelly Furtado having a pop at Fergie and Justin Timberlake dissing, um, Janet Jackson.

D.O.E. - Piano Man (produced by Timbaland) [mp3]

Timbaland - Give It To Me (feat. Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake) [mp3] [Buy]

Unlike us, Pace Rock is no Lindsay Lohan fan:

Pace Rock - Lindsay Lohan [mp3]

Uffie decided to hit back against the snarks by dissing the whole Hollertronix messageboard:

Uffie - Holler-Glock (Go Play With Your Stickers) [mp3]

Sufjan Stevens has covered Joni Mitchell’s dig at David Geffen for a new Joni tribute album:

Sufjan Stevens - Free Man In Paris [mp3] [Buy - seems a bit pricey]

Good luck!
