Sometimes life is full of happy coincidences. Like in 2012, when our heroes get to the airport and there's no one to fly the plane, but then the plastic surgeon step dad guy who was in The Wire reveals he's an amateur pilot with awesome flying skills. Similarly, this chat with Small Black comes dripping in serendipity. It turns out that in the band's Josh Kolenik we've stumbled upon Brooklyn's biggest/only Ipswich Town fan. It's like finding a lostbrother. After the jump he talks about Marcus Stewart. Amazing.
Josh Kolenik: "a) Small Black is in fact NOT a Long Island duo! We haven’t lived there for years and years, and although our families still live there and we did record the album out there, we are Brooklyn boys for sure. And for live shows, we add two more members (Jeff Curtin & Juan Pieczanski) on bass & drums so we can flesh the sound out.
"b) My Uncle Matt, who’s on the cover of the 7 inch, builds & shapes his own surfboards under the moniker Slow Burn. They are all one of a kind and he shapes & fiberglasses them up in the attic where we did a lot of the EP. The patterns on them are really psychedelic and wild. We used one pattern with teardrops for the inner label for the 7 inch. We’re really excited about the video for Despicable Dogs too, as it features my Uncle Matt working on the boards.
"c) I used to be a big football fan after I visited the UK a long time ago. Was really smitten with Ipswich Town for the season when the made a run to the top of the table awhile back.. They had this striker, Marcus Stewart, that seemed to have everything click for him that year. Haven’t had much time to follow it in recent years, but I’m sure I’ll get back into it when the World Cup rolls around."

JK: " Joker – Purple City. We are pretty obsessed with everything Joker does. I’ve heard he’s been described as the Dr. Dre of dubstep and I can see how that fits. It’s definitely a totally exciting and new sound & direction for dubstep/grime. We try to listen to Purple City right before we play every show. Unbelievable hype up song."
Joker & Ginz - Purple City
"Pictureplane – Goth Star. We just did a few shows with Travis. He’s got this wild & raw aesthetic that he brings to his live performance. Tinfoil getting shredded amidst crazy stage lights. We are big fans of the whole Dark Rift record, but Goth Star really sticks out. The Stevie Nicks hook is ridiculous. Its alien, dark & danceable, yet you can still bump it hanging out at your house. "
JK: "I wish The Wire would come back for a 6th season. Maybe a prequel of some sorts? Like McNulty’s first year on the job? Rise of Avon & Stringer? Probably not a new story in there, so I doubt it would happen. Really excited for David Simon’s New Orleans project, Treme."
Small Black's Despicable Dogs 7" is out today on Transparent. A split 7" with Washed Out follows on Lovepump United on January 26th with remixes.
