HERO is an irregular new feature here at Pinglewood. We spoke to some of our favourite artists and asked them, who do you love? It will probably die quietly within a month so we hope you enjoy it while it lasts. First up is the awesome Micachu talking about the iconoclastic American composer Harry Partch.
Micachu: "He didn't fit into American society and the musical traditions of the west didn't fit with what he was interested in. He was a hobo for a while and he would just dot in and out teasing people with these incredibly interesting ideas; ideas that came from nature and not conforming.
Part 1 of a BBC documentary about Harry Partch
"He created his own micro tonality and invented and adapted instruments to accommodate the pitches he'd chosen. He'd play an organ that had 43 tones instead of 12. He had a whole orchestra of instruments like that, viola's with cello necks, all this unusual percussion. He speaks over his music. It's like beat poetry about America. He has a very charismatic voice, sort of like Captain Beefheart. There are really interesting pop elements to his music too. I think he's incredibly underrated in the scheme of things.”
