LFF07: Funny Games

People have been whining about arthouse hero Michael Haneke’s decision to remake his horrifying 1997 film Funny Games in America. Fact is, ten years on, in a world where torture-porn is the most awesome new thing, the US edition of Funny Games is arriving at exactly the right time. Shot-for-shot, word-for-word (save for the odd “why don’t you have a landline?” disclaimer for the hole-picking fussyoles) it’s an exact replica of the first film which found an innocent family terrorized by a pair of sociopathic young charmers. The new cast excel, though their starriness can’t help remove some the original’s glacial realism. However the point of the film, Haneke’s own funny game, is to make the audience complicit in the horror unfolding on screen, to deny them satisfaction and question their enjoyment. It still does this ruthless efficiency.

Here's some easy listening from the soundtrack.
