“Like Mark E. Smith fronting a free jazz band" is how lazy people have described One More Grain and being pretty slack ourselves we’re happy to concur. If Smith sacked the rest of The Fall (again) and replaced them with an Arkestra tribute band they might sound something like this striking Bow-based quartet.
Led by hill-obsessed Lancastrian Daniel Patrick Quinn (on drones & rants) the band’s debut album Pigeon English slipped out on the always great Victory Garden in early April. They’re playing all over London in the next couple of weeks and have a host of new demos on MySpace.
During yesterday’s FallFest we learned that Mark E. Smith is no fan of James Murphy and after listening to a great mixtape from one of our favourite FOPs we imagine Jonathan Richman is similarly unimpressed by our favourite face-painted firework target. Our pal’s tape includes The Modern Lovers' swaggering anti-hippy/hipster diatribe I’m Straight from 1976 and Richman’s bunged up, caustic delivery rung (cow)bells throughout the Pinglepad.
